Fishing Cove - Godrevy Point

Beautiful little cove on the north Cornwall coast near St Ives, down a fairly good trail from the cliff top coast path

This is a beautiful little cove located on the north coast of Cornwall near Navax Point and not too far from St. Ives.

Getting There

The access is described as "fairly good" - and better than may naturist beaches.

From Hayle take the B3301 towards Portreath. Immediately after the single track bridges turn left down a lane to the NT car park (£1.50, members free). Use the field at the end. The path round the headland goes from the far side, and the one across the headland from the right hand corner. It is a 2km (but "very fine") walk to the east across the headland and along the coast path. Going round the headland adds 500m. As you approach the cove you will be able to see the path down the cliffs.

Alternatively, continue along the B3301 for another 1.4km to a small, free, NT car park that is only a couple of hundred metres from the cove. Walk west along the coast path to find the path down. The path is fairly steep and the steps are not brilliant, but neither is it particularly difficult. "We had a 6 year old with us and he had no difficulty at all." However, the path does require care.

Description

"When we were there, it was low tide and there was plenty of lovely sand available away from the shade of the cliffs. A man said that the shade from the cliffs can be a problem, especially late or early in the year. I should think that the state of the tide also makes a difference. At least the walk back up the cliffs is in the shade!"

Other Coves near Godrevy Point

"David Martin's book suggests that the coves to the east of Godrevy Point are suitable. From above, it looked like the one at the end of the path cutting across the headland from the NT car park was best. However, the path down looked difficult and the sand looked poorer than at Fishing Cove. Overall rating - fairly good, but Fishing Cove is better in all respects."

December 02, 2007 - "I have visited this beach on a number of occasions, on one occasion spending 6 hours there. It is used by a mixture of locals and tourists and has an extremely friendly atmosphere. The sea is great to swim in, although the currents can make it challenging if it is windy. It is a very steep climb in and out of the cove but well worth it. The comment about the shade can be an advantage if you are not used to too long in the sun as you can seek shelter. A hidden gem."

July 20, 2008 - "I went to this beach many years ago, and as I was swimming seals kept popping up around me. A quite magical experience. Now I have seen it here I will go back again."

14, 2008 - "what a beach - all you could ask for... quiet and the views are stunning... you can swim with out any problems and then a seal could pop up and say hello... locals very friendly the walk up and down can be challanging but well worth it."

2009

July 14, 2009 - "Tranquil and peaceful with a desert island feel. There were two other couples on the beach when we visited. The beach was clean white sand and the water clear blue. It is quite a scramble down to the beach though, with ropes fixed to the cliff to assist in the narrowest and steepest sections. Quite a few coast path walkers look down with their binoculars from the top."

August 14, 2009 - "...my local beach and is, as said, a real gem...whoever looks after the path down and generally keeps the beach tidied is an angel. A landslip earlier this year made the path a little more treacherous but work by the 'locals' has made it safe again - take care and on a sunny day it's a lil' bit of Cornish heaven..."

August 18, 2009 - "This is our treasured local beach and the joy of it can be spoilt by people leaving rubbish. The currents of the tide wash up anything that has been left for days to come, so please take any home with you. A while back a container was washed up on the shore and caring people all managed to remove all the dangerous parts for everyone to enjoy the beach again. This is the feel of the people that use this beach regularly, that they wish to preserve the beauty and safety. A lovely couple maintain the path through the winter.."

carl 2010-08-03 - Slippery underfoot on the path down after rain. great beach. 3 nude and 2 family textiles. All got on without a problem. What a lovely beach, and so private once you get there.
