2km walk through low dunes to sandy beach, south of Port Talbot steel plant

Also known as 'Sker Beach' and Cynffig in Welsh, this is a long stretch of sand between Porthcawl and Port Talbot adjacent to Kenfig Burrows.

By car:
Leave the M4 motorway at junction 37 (Pyle) or junction 38 (Margam). Follow the signs for Cynffig Nature Reserve where there is ample parking. From the nature reserve make your way on foot down to the beach ( the sea is visible from the car park) but it is a walk of 1.5 miles through the sand hills.

Upon reaching the track that divides the beach from the sand hills, turn right and walk for about ten minutes toward the steel works in Port Talbot - this is to ensure that you reach the quietest part of the beach - (if you reach the river you have gone too far). This is reputedly known as 'Morfa', while the beach to the left of the access is called 'Sker'. Further south-eastward toward Porthcawl lie Pink Bay, Rest Bay and then Porthcawl/Trecco. Choosing a spot just below the dunes will mean you can avoid the in-coming tide and any horse riders, fishermen or joggers who use the beach.

Description

Kenfig Burrows are popular with locals but do not get the attention they deserve. It is a beautiful, clean and tranquil place, with plenty of room to spread out for those who wish to be alone, or larger areas for those who want to socialise. It can be reached at any time, - access being gained from the landward side - and there is no hurry to leave because the shingle prevents the sea from cutting you off at high tide. In 'Free Sun' the beach was described as "an excellent beach and huge area [of] unfrequented sand dunes". The beach is in easy reach of B&B's, campsites etc etc.

Note that swimming conditions may be dangerous - especially near the river. As always, local information should be sought before risking life and limb.

Facilities

None on the beach itself, but 'The Angel' pub is said to be a great place for a meal and a drink after a day on the beach. Alternatively, try the 'Prince of Wales' in Kenfig for excellent food and real ales, straight from the barrel. "The Draught Bass is worthy of the gods themselves."

Thanks to this site I was able to find this beach with reasonable ease. The long walk through the dunes was a little disconcerting as there are a few paths, but I just kept heading towards the sea.
I'm sat here as I'm typing this on a Monday afternoon. At least I hope I'm here? No-one else is around. I was hoping to see at least one other person as this is my first time 'non-textile' on any beach.

(Now I just need to build up the courage to go in the sea. It's a long way away from where I've set up camp. Maybe I'll just wait a while, but I think it might still be going out.) :(

I'll have to take a trip down there see what the fuss is all about and as everyone says how pretty and tranquille it is I may have to take my camera to take photos of the scenery ...dunes and sea /coast line aas I am a part time photographer....

GREAT BEACH! Came here midweek the beach was lovely. Walked naked along the designated beach. Had no problems with the usual oogling ... males you often get on these beaches, which can be quite scary. Probably about ten other nudes on the beach - didn't see any textiles.

I went to kenfig wanting to walk the beach and get over the feeling that being nude is rude. but i don't want to break the law or offend anyone couldn't see any signs saying naturist area etc but the weather was really bad anyhow. no one on the beach at all!

As Sker Beach is the nearest naturist beach (unofficial) to Cardiff, here are the details for getting there by bus, yes it is possible and fairly easy!
Take the X2 bus from Cardiff bus station to Porthcawl (Lias Road - Co-op) then take the 63B from the same stop and get off the stop after Kenfig Nature Reserve (Prince of Wales Pub). From behind the bus shelter take the Blue marked route through the dunes towards the steelworks. Return is exactly the same except the X2 bus to Cardiff leaves Porthcawl from John Street.
The complete journey takes around 2 hours each way - check the timetables before travelling. For the walk across the dunes allow 45 minutes. A great day out and it is worth the effort:)

Went to Kenfig really early - first one's on beach. Tide was right in but sea was a bit too cold for swimming, although later a brave naturist couple were bodyboarding - impressed. Generally very quiet, with 2 other couples and the usual gaggle of males... . About 2 o'clock the wind changed direction and low level sea fog started rolling in, so we packed up. By the time we got back to the car the fog was gone so we spent rest of the day sunning in garden. For first time we parked near Prince of Wales pub and walked Port Talbot side of Kenfig Pool, along the bridleway which was a good deal shorter. Hope this weather keeps up.

We managed to get a few hours in the very hot sun today at Kenfig. The beach was almost deserted allowing us to enjoy a long walk in the buff to the sea (very cold) and back. We didnt see any other couples, just a few friendly single blokes enjoying the view.

When you get to the bottom of the cwm, take a right turn and walk across the first beach to the next headland. naturists use the ledges. The steps / ladder are further on towards Dunraven.

I echo your comments - very frustrating
I did get to Monknash today to find out how to get to that facility. Sadly the tide was in and I couldn't find the steps/ladder others mention.
I went down the Blaen-y-Cwm path alongside the stream to the shore but not sure where from there. Do you know?
Prob more likely to go to Kenfig .
Might catch up with you sometime.

Hi, we like to say that we'v had a very plesant 2nd weekend at Kenfig Burrows,the sea is nice we find a nice spot in the dunes to top our tans up,theres a few guys who like to walk back and fore looking at my naked wife but that is normal,its a very nice place to relax so we will be going again. We recommend it.

The best place to park is in the car park of the nature reserve and walk down it should take about half an hour.

The wife and I spent a very pleasant couple of hours here sunday afternoon. It's quite a trek through the nature reserve to get to the beach, but once there it very quiet and peaceful. We are infrequent nudists and we appreciate the solitude. There were a couple of other unclothed men on the beach and one guy seemed to take a particular interest in my wife. I don't know if its normal for men to stare at women but it seemed a bit rude. It didn't worry us and we enjoyed ourselves anyway.. it's very pleasant.

We had a sun umbrella but would advise a windbreak next time as we did get well and truly sandblasted. Lets hope the sun is here to stay....

I found both water and beach to be of a reasonable standard ideal for sunbathing and a swim when the tide is in.the fact that it is isolated makes it the perfect place for both male and females.
