9 at the tube, with 1 at the sculpture making 10 to start. overcast , making for a premature dusk. We lost 3 touring the sculpture,as we headed for Parliament Hill, and were down to 5 as we reached the top for the wonderful view, with all the red lights on the tall buildings and cranes. The Princess of Wales didn't have a table at which point our newcomer opted out, leaving 4 of us to eat in The Engineers. Friendly service and reasonable food before heading to Campden Town.

Regents Park Sculpture: 4 at start of walk and weather was cloudy followed by darkness . We met up just inside the gates of the park, and all had a good look at the sculptures. One then left, and three of us completed (or tried to complete the walk). As happened a few years ago, we couldn't follow the official route to Camden canal due to security guards and fencing, in anticipation of Pres Biden's visit. We did walk the canal, walked up to Primrose Hill view point and admired the city below, then down to Princess of Wales for drinks and eats. Very enjoyable.

11 walkers assembled in the park to have an extensive look at the sculptures. 30 minutes later we re-assembled to exchange opinions (consensus: a better selection than last year), and move on. It did go unnoticed at the time though that 1 of the 9 (2 had already moved on) was a late arrival, so - inadvertendly - we left one other walker behind. Apologies to her!

We got to the top of Primrose Hill for 20.00 hours, with still just a smidgeon of light in the sky and a great panorama. Yours truly confidently identified the big white thing as 'The Moon', the more show offy types in the group though pointed at Jupiter and Saturn. But it could've been Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos in their respective spaceships, for all we know. The jury's very much out on that one, I'd say...

On to The Princess of Wales, after some not-so-great experience last year at The Pembroke Castle. We had a large table downstairs to ourselves, and left at 22.00 hours.

7 initially on the walk, later joined by a trickle of 3 late starters, so 10 in dry weather. Just 12 sculptures on show in this Covid-ravaged smaller Frieze Sculpture Park. Everyone seemed to have found a few of them to their liking though.

In two groups on we went and only bumped into each other again at the top of Primrose Hill, which was a great vantage spot today with just a few fluffy clouds about, providing clear views of all the lit scrapers London has to offer.

We then followed the main drag through Primrose Hill to The Pembroke pub, which luckily had two tables free. Whiel our time there was marred by some loud music, everyone seemed to order food and drink.

Sloppy walk posting meant that only then we realised that Chalk Farm station still shuts at 19.00 hours these days, so we walked to Camden Town via the canal. Nice.

Four started earlier than the scheduled time,

    and thoroughly enjoyed the walk.

The sculptures were great, the canal a delight

and the view from Primrose Hill was stunning.

Thank you to Thomas for posting this walk.

4 earlier starters as well? Well, we were 16 at the end in The Engineer, most ordering food, incl. 1 partner of a walker who had met us only on top of Primrose Hill, but we also 'lost' at least one walker, maybe 2 (I did two counts early on with different results) somewhere around the start of the walk, so definitely 20 walkers, maybe 21, on a balmy evening with a cold breeze late on .

14 (or 15) started, incl. 5 first-timers, some of whom drawn in via Meetup. This included 1 tourist who had only arrived in London on the day!

We spent about 25 minutes amongst the 23 sculptures, and - warning: personal opinion - I'd say it's a more interesting selection than last year. Maybe that was too long a time for the walker(s) we then 'lost'? A late starter caught up with us then and 1 other met us on Primrose Hill having started from her office in Baker Street and along the canal (i.e. short cutting). And then there was the man with the bike...

No animals were to be seen in the parts of the Zoo that can be seen from the canal (the aviary is going through a refurb apparently) and we were then greeted by a stonkingly beautiful orange sky upon approaching PH.

The Engineer had a brilliant long table seating us all, close to their pretty garden, but out of the coldish wind that started up at the time.

Punters started to leave close to 22.00 hours, and the last group was then persuaded by Mr. Google-Maps to try the ending to Camden Town station, which was - devoid of tourists at that late hour - very good indeed.

Only 4 walkers met at Regent's Park station, but two others had already walked on from the noisy Marylebone Road site to the entrance of the park and waited there, and with one other being a little delayed, a respectable 7 was the turnout on a warm and pleasant night. We spent quite a while in the area of the Sculpture Park, the 25 sculptures in most people's opinion being a little more interesting than last year's display.

On through the park only to find our route blocked by high fencing, manned by mounted Met Police and some serious looking Secret Service stooges: The Donald would be staying at the US Ambassador's residence for the night, and that is just off route! [It also neatly explained why a couple of Chinook's were flying across the park earlier.]

We looked for and found an alternative route out of the park and onto the canalside path some few hundred metres away and - at the top of Primrose Hill - were met by the cycling hubbie of one walker.

Having decided to this year find the recommended pub stop, The Engineer, we did just that, and all but one stayed for drinks and/or a meal. 3 then had a nightcap at The Pembroke Castle, en route to Chalk Farm tube.

Great Portland Street Tube Station (Circle/Hammersmith & City/Metropolitan Lines) is about 200 metres east of Regents Park Tube if that suits better.

  • 31-Aug-17

16 met at regents pk station at the alloted time, 1 other caught up with the group after a few minutes, so 17 in fine late summer evening weather .

reactions to the 23 sculptures dotted close to each other around the 'English Garden' section of Regents Pk ranged from 'I liked one of them' to 'I liked almost all of them', as they should.

on through the park and along the canal, with some grand cloudscapes, then up to primrose hill, mid-dusk. after a long period of guessing which distant building was which, we descended towards the pub destination, only to then not trust our judgement upon leaving the park (we thought we were in the wrong place, when we weren't) and took a wrong turning. off to another pub then, where 15 of us took tables to then order food, only to find that after a few had ordered theirs, the chef had had enough and closed the kitchen! cue more drinks...
