Another visit to this 10.8 mile Wealden wonder last undertaken in February 2010 (though the first 5 miles to Slaugham are duplicated in SWC walk 312, recorded in June 2018) and recorded on the mobile phone.
Today was very different weather, being balmy and overcast, but the scenery had little changed, thankfully! The first section is one of field edges, and woods typical of this area and passes the former school of Ditton Place, now apartments. The walker then enters the National Trust's Nyman's Woods and park before arriving at St Mary's parish church, Slaugham for lunch.
Thereafter, and a viewing of the 600 year-old Yew in the cemetery, the afternoon section is less wooded, more agricultural and has a little more road walking. The section beside the river Ouse will be very muddy during the winter months.
Another fine walk, best undertaken in the drier months, if possible.
The gardens of Nymans & the ruins of Slaugham
Distance: 17.6 km (10.9 miles)
Grading: Intermediate
Rating: 5 out of 10.
Ascent: 696.8 m
hiking time: About 4 to 5 hours of actual hiking
It is a walk full of small pleasures: a nature reserve and lake with Japanese flag down the stream below the gardens and park with its manor Nymans part in ruins; a cemetery in Slaugham with a yew tree 600 years old, about 10 meters in circumference; the ruins of Slaugham Manor; then a walk to the River Ouse - with the incongruous sight of a semicircular arch and columns in the middle of nowhere - and later through fields and woods to the ancient village of Balcombe fine.
This walk is covered by our Club's insurance. Our Club is registered on The British Mountaineering Council (BMC)
