    Hiking In London, Mar-22

River Ver, historic St Albans and the Roman town of Verulamium

    Distance: 14.0 km (8.7 miles)

    Grading: Easy

    Rating: 2 out of 10

    Ascents: 100 m

hiking time: About 5.5 to 6.5 hours of actual hiking

We start our walk in Garston through Bricket Wood Common to Lord Knutsford’s park and manor at Munden, passing the impressively converted Netherwylde Farm, to go along the River Colne and River Ver to Moor Mill Inn.

The walk then follows Ver Valley Walk arrows almost all day, up through woods and blackberries, beside lakes, along the River Ver to a mobile home park and on into Park Street.

St Albans Abbey and its monastic buildings were completed with bricks from the Roman town (dismantled because it had become a hiding place for robber gangs).

Clock Tower. Up the 93 steps of the tower’s spiral staircase, you will discover that each of its five floors reveals a snapshot of the tower’s varied historical past. Ticket for admission included.

  • Garston to St Albans. 20/12/10.
    amib, Dec-10

Around 8.5 miles of walking in the south western corner of Hertfordshire; leaving Garston, the walker soon enters Bricket Wood Common, then passing by Munden House and Netherwylde Farm. The walker follows Ver Valley Walk arrows in the afternoon as the walk follows the Ver (from whence Verulamium got its name) and its water meadows into St Albans.

Not a bad walk (though the snowy scenes helped!) considering its proximity to urban areas and motorways.
