Milford to Haslemere walk

Its surprising how remote Surrey can be, pretty lakes, heathland, and Devil's Punchbowl as well.

Another update of a walk last undertaken in 2010. This excellent 11.6 miler, done in decent conditions (though with a moderate breeze, affecting commentary up on the heathland) starts off with around a mile of road walking, but, thereafter, beyond the A3, the scenery is wonderful; commons and woodland nature reserves, even a large pond.

Lunch is had at the lovely Thursley church, around 5.5 miles in, though a pub option is also available.

The afternoon section is initially one of quiet lanes and sunken byways, on the ascent to Hindhead and the Devil's Punch Bowl alongside, offering some outstanding views on the way. This variant goes via the Punch Bowl rim, rather than going down into the Bowl.

The expensive Hindhead tunnel was opened in 2011, after this walker's last visit, and it's money well spent, in his opinion. It makes such a difference to the environment.

The finale is along the Greensand Way, with more fine views, and the Serpent Trail back into Haslemere.

An outstanding afternoon's walking! Particularly for those preferring remoteness. The paths are mainly sandy trails, but there are some heavily rutted byways in places. Highly recommended!

Around 10.6 miles of walking across Heathland, through pine forests, on through the Devil's Punch bowl, and then along the Greensand Way into Haslemere.
