Cemetries

London has 7 Magnificent Victorian Gothic cemeteries, wih Palladian architecture and landscaped ground, mature trees, and famouse (deceased) inhabitents. And all but 1 are free to visit. Start with Highgate or Kensal Green.

Besides this there are many smaller cemetries, and of course, the massive London Necropolis in Brookwood (about 40min outside London by train)

Please act appropriately while visiting cemeteries. Funerals may be taking place, and some people are visiting graves.

Cemetery Bell's Hill Burial Ground 3

The north-eastern end has older monuments and is wooded with mature cedar and yew trees. Wildflowers include common knapweed and lady's bedstraw, while brambles and roses climb the tombs in wilder areas. The south-western area is more managed with mown grass, and some graves have flowers. There is access from Spring Close. Free entry during daylight hours.

Cemetery Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries 91

Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries near Greenwich were formerly 2 separate cemeteries which both opened in 1858. They are characteristic examples of the first wave of Victorian public cemeteries. They are also a haven for wildlife, plants and wildflowers. Evidence of Deptford's seafaring past can be found in the many inscriptions and adornments on the headstones. Open daily 10:00 to 15:30 (an hour later in summer). Free.

Magnificent 7 Brompton Cemetery 16 Magnificent 7

Near Earl's Court in West London, managed by The Royal Parks, one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries. Opened in 1840, it is one of Britain's oldest and most distinguished garden cemeteries. Some 35,000 monuments, from simple headstones to substantial mausolea, includes large plots for family mausolea, and common graves where coffins are piled deep into the earth, as well as a small columbarium. Open in daylight hours. Free

Necropolis Brookwood Cemetery 202 Necropolis

Brookwood Cemetery, also known as the London Necropolis, is a burial ground in Brookwood, Surrey, England. It is the largest cemetery in the United Kingdom and one of the largest in Europe. The cemetery is a Grade I site in the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

Cemetery Bunhill Fields 4

Bunhill Fields is a former burial ground north of the City of London, which sufferd much damage during WW2. Its now managed as a public garden. Historically it was much larger. Over 2,000 monuments remain. It was particularly favoured by Nonconformists, including John Bunyan (d. 1688), author of The Pilgrim's Progress ; Daniel Defoe (d. 1731), author of Robinson Crusoe ; William Blake (d. 1827). Nearby was a separate Quaker burial ground, sometimes also known by the name Bunhill Fields. Its remains are also now a public garden, Quaker Gardens. Open Weekdays from 7.30am (weekends 9:30am) to 7pm or dusk (which ever is earlier). Access to the gated areas is by prior arrangement and before 3pm.

Cemetery Charlton Cemetery 37

Charlton Cemetery in south east London opened in 1855. It has retained its Victorian layout, and features two 19th century chapels and numerous military graves. It was originally created as "Gentleman's Cemetery".

Mitcham Road Cemetery (previously Croydon Cemetery) is next to Mitcham Common in south London. It is much larger than other ones in London.

Highgate Cemetery is a place of burial in north London, England. It is designated Grade I on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. It is divided into two parts, named the East and West cemetery. It is notable both for some of the people buried there as well as for its de facto status as a nature reserve.

One of the Magnificent 7 cemeteries in Kensal Green, West London. Inspired by the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Opened in 1833, includes 2 conservation areas, adjoining a canal. The cemetery has a host of different memorials ranging from large mausoleums housing the rich and famous to many distinctive smaller graves. Despite its Grecian-style buildings the cemetery is primarily Gothic in character due to the high number of private Gothic monuments. Due to this atmosphere, the cemetery was used in many movies. Lambeth Cemetery, Blackshaw Road, Tooting, London SW17 0BY is in Tooting in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It is one of three cemeteries now owned by the London Borough of Lambeth (the others being the South Metropolitan Cemetery in West Norwood and Streatham Cemetery also outside Lambeth and in the London Borough of Wandsworth).

Magnificent 7 Nunhead Cemetery 21 Magnificent 7

Nunhead Cemetery is the second largest of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries, with views over London to St. Pauls. It is near Nunhead in south London. Opened in 1840, it is perhaps the least famous and celebrated of them. The cemetery is located in the Nunhead area of southern London. The Victorian part of the cemetery is currently in a poor state of repair, being best described as an elegant wilderness. It is in need of care and funding. Free entry. Open 8:30 to dusk. Entry on Linden Grove and Limesford Road.

Cemetery Putney Vale Cemetery 116

Putney Vale Cemetery is in southwest London, surrounded by the A3, Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common. It is located within 47 acres of parkland. The cemetery was opened in 1891. Six Victoria Cross recipients have been buried or cremated here.

Is in Croydon, south London. It opened in 1861, and is west of Selhurst railway station.It has large trees and landscaped with shrubbery beds. Open 9am - dusk

Cemetery St Pancras and Islington Cemetery 77

St Pancras and Islington Cemetery is in East Finchley, North London while situated in the London Borough of Barnet is actually two cemeteries, owned by two other London Boroughs, Camden (formerly St Pancras ) and Islington. The fence along the boundary which runs west to east between the two parts of the cemetery has been removed, although the line of it is still marked. It has more graves than any other cemetery in the UK, with around one million interments and cremations. It is designated Grade II on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England. It is an operating cemetery.

Magnificent 7 Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park 10 Magnificent 7

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park is a historic cemetery, one of the Magnificent Seven, located in Bow, East London. The cemetery opened in 1841, but is now a park / nature reserve, and resembles natural woodland, with a 'green corridor' to Mile End Park. Entrance on Southern Grove, E3 (5 minutes walk from Mile End tube). Open from dawn till dusk. Free. There is street parking at weekends only.

Cemetery West Ham Jewish Cemetery

The Jewish Cemetery at West Ham is a Jewish Cemetery in West Ham, London, England. The cemetery was established in 1856 by the New Synagogue on Great St. Helen's soon joined by the Great Synagogue in Duke's Place, both London congregations. There are a number of notable people buried here, in a graveyard visually dominated by the imposing Rothschild Mausoleum. One section contains graves removed to this burial place from the former Hoxton burial ground of the Hambro Synagogue when that site underwent urban redevelopment. The oldest legible tombstone in this section dates from 1794. In 2005 a number of monuments were destroyed and graves desecrated in what the police described as an attack by anti-Semitic vandals. The doors of the mausoleum were pounded with heavy iron bars until they were bashed in, then they were torn from the building.

West Norwood Cemetery is in West Norwood, South London. One of the first private landscaped cemeteries in London, it is one of the Magnificent Seven cemeteries, and is a site of major historical, architectural and ecological interest. Its grounds are a mixture of historic monumental cemetery and modern lawn cemetery, but it also has catacombs, cremation plots and a columbarium (for storing urns of ashes).

Cemetery Willesden Jewish Cemetery

One of Londons most prestigious Jewish Cemeteries. Opened 1873. Entrance in Beaconsfield Road, Willesden, north west London. Open 09:00 to 17:00 weekdays only. Close an hour earlier in winter and on Friday.
