Crackaig Beach
Highland
Sandy beach near Helmsdale, between Inverness and Wick
General
Located in the far north of Scotland, near Helmsdale, on the A9 between Inverness and Wick.
Getting There
Satnav: KW8 8HP, but its a pretty large postcode.
Heading north from Inverness, after 50 miles or so, pass Brora, then after about 5km, take a turning east, off the A9, signed 'Crakaig'. If you reach Helmsdale, you've gone way too far!
Follow the minor road, going under the railway line (low bridge, not for high vehicles). The road then bends left towards a campsite, then right towards the coast. Follow the coast southwest till the end of the now bumpy track.
The track is very rutted towards the end!
Description
Remote sandy beach, sand dunes, but not so good for swimming.
Some websites say the beach has 'official' natursit status, but they may just be repeating one another.
Facilities
The campsite (£20 per night) is a farmer's field with a great view, a 'caravan graveyard', a toilet and shower block (no drinking water), but little else.
