Richmond Park Short Walk T=Short.7

Distance: Approximately 4.25 miles or 7.6 km for those more metrically minded

Difficulty: 2 out of 10

Travel: 18:20 South Western train from London Waterloo , arriving at Richmond at 18:36. Richmond is also reachable on the District Line. Return trains and tube run frequently.

This walk takes a varied route first along the Thames River, then past the impressive Ham House before entering Richmond Park. Once in the park, the route climbs the escarpment for some fine views across the Thames valley. With the return of British Summer time -- you make it most of the way around before darkness -- perhaps catching a nice sunset from the lookout point in the Park.....

Please ensure you keep a safe distance from any deer spotted in Richmond Park and do NOT feed them – they have apparently become quite interested in people (and any food that may be offered)….

Various options exist for post walk drinks and/or meal….

More information about the route can be found here .

2 off the posted train, caught by a delayed starter near Ham House, so 3 on a warm and sunny evening. It was busy out on the paths and in the pubs, but not too crowded, so a very pleasant stroll was had. 2 ventured into The Roebuck for a drink and then saw the very last slither of red hot sun setting beyond the horizon when they left the pub.

9 assembled at Richmond station on a warm sunny evening . The walk along the river in the evening was particularly idyllic. The group slightly diverged on its way from the river to the park, as one group followed the written text and the other the GPX....interestingly, the KML differs from the GPX and follows the written instructions....At any rate, we regrouped on top of the escarpment in the park and carried on together, pausing to enjoy the view from King Henry's Mound -- both of St. Paul's (noting however that the tree trimmers have missed a branch or two which partially obscure the view) and out west across the Thames Valley. En route back to Richmond village, we also paused to enjoy the "Turner view" before exploring a new pleasant route down through some terraced gardens to the riverside. We secured an outdoor table at the White Cross where most enjoyed a drink and some food....A nice evening out!

Four looked forlornly at the showers streaming down outside from just inside the Richmond station exit at the appointed time.....and decided to wait a spell before setting off...Eventually the skies cleared and we set off soon to meet a later arrival, making for 5 in what turned out to be an idyllic evening sunshine stroll along the Thames with a finale up the escarpment in Richmond Park, pausing to take a look at St. Paul's from "the Mount" view point. En route, one of the party interestingly demonstrated how to pick and eat the tip of a nettle...which is apparently very tasty (though the full mature leaves are toxic). Returning to the river, 4 opted to visit the White Cross for a drink and snack where we enjoyed the unusual pleasure of sitting in a warm and dry environment inside with a great view of the Thames.
