Evening Walk: Daffodils in the Dark (Paddington to Charing Cross)

Distance: Approximately 4.4 miles or 7.2 km for those more metrically minded

Difficulty: 1 out of 10

Meet: At the entrance to “The Lawn” inside Paddington Station at 18:30

Return: Charing Cross – mainline and tube

This walk is part of a trilogy of walks through London passing by each of its terminus stations. This section has the benefit of passing through St. James Park which is usually awash in daffodils at this time of year -- though some may be going over by now.... We will likely need to tweak the route a bit to stay in Hyde Park as Kensington Gardens closes at 18:30....

    It took a bit for the 5 to find one another in a chaotic Paddington -- but we did ultimately connect and set off about 15 minutes late paying homage to the station's name sake on the way....please take care of this bear...... nourished with marmalade sandwiches off we went.... Approaching Kensington Gardens, we found the gates open -- so risked the designated route and escaped through open gates on the far end...phew....along the serpentine we continued on a fine clear evening . After admiring Belgravia and Victoria we entered St. James's park and did indeed find some daffs still standing tall and proud.....such brave spring frontrunners .....As Horseguards gate was closed, we made the suggested detour which brought us almost directly to the backdoor of the Horseguards pub....well, of course, we entered.... fine establishment. All had drinks and/or food....those eating found the food much better than the former weatherspoons at that location... A nice night out!

Evening Walk: London train terminus stations (Paddington to Charing Cross)

Return: Charing Cross – mainline and tube

This walk is part of a trilogy of walks through London passing by each of its terminus stations. Earlier in the winter, we did the section from Charing Cross to Liverpool Street (or London Bridge for some of us). Tonight, we will do the preceding section from Paddington to Charing Cross. Please note, however, that we will need to modify the route slightly by going through Hyde Park rather than Kensington Gardens which still closes too early for our purposes!

    7 assembled at the appointed place, including 1 first timer. After paying our respects to the station's namesake, we set off into the night along the designated route with a slight diversion into Hyde Park. In the park, we were treated to a bright moon and a fine alignment of Jupiter and Mars. While admiring these celestial delights, a late starter found us, making for 8. We carried on through Belgravia and Victoria then St. James Park where the daffs were out in force. Nearing Charing Cross, 5 peeled off to a pub for drinks/food and 3 went straight to the station. A fun and interesting night out!

Thursday Evening: London train terminus stations walk via the Southbank (Charing Cross to Liverpool Street)

Distance: Approximately 5.3 miles or 8.6 km for those more metrically minded

Difficulty: 1 out of 10

Meet: In the forecourt in front of Charing Cross Station at 18:30

End: Liverpool Street

As the Southbank is becoming festive, I thought it would be a good time to do the segment of the London train terminus walk that follows the Southbank. From its start at Charing Cross Station, the route crosses the Thames, goes along the Southbank and then crosses and recrosses the river, past many interesting sights and into the heart of the City of London.

    5 assembled in the forecourt of Charing Cross to admire the grand architecture of the building before setting of on this interesting walk exploring London's terminus stations. The route took us through Charing Cross and over the river to Waterloo which we walked past (rather than entering). We then carried along the Southbank for a spell with its festive market stalls and an interesting series of light installations. We crossed over the river again to pass by Cannon Street station and then recrossed on London Bridge where we met number 6. With most being familiar with London Bridge station, we opted to walk along the river and then diverted to Shad Thames for some food and beverage before most returned to London Bridge. A fun night out in dry cold conditions .

Thursday Evening: London train terminus stations – Part 3 (Charing Cross to Liverpool Street or Moorgate)

Distance: Approximately 5.3 miles or 8.6 km for those more metrically minded (extension to Moorgate adds 0.4 mile or 0.7 km)

Difficulty: 1 out of 10

Meet: In the forecourt in front of Charing Cross Station at 18:30

Return: Liverpool Street or Moorgate Station

At last, the final installment of our journey around central London terminus stations. We will be picking up where we left off at Charing Cross Station and will hopefully manage to make it to Liverpool Street or Moorgate Station.

The route tonight will take us across the river Thames and back again, past many interesting sights and into the heart of the City of London. More information about the route can be found here .     15 left the appointed meeting place at Charing Cross on this final stretch of the London terminus walk under partly sunny skies with cool easterly breeze . The route took us back and forth across the Thames on a few occasion visiting icon London train stations such as Waterloo and London bridge, as well as, some lesser known ones such as, Cannon Street and Fenchurch Street....in between were a host of other interesting landmarks, again some well known and others less so. On Tower Bridge we met one other, making for 16 on this enjoyable night out. A few pealed off here and there along the route, but most I think went in search of refreshments in Spitalfields market...

SWC 374: Kings Cross to Liverpool Street via 13 stations walk (Part 2)

Meet: At the entrance to “The Lawn” inside Paddington Station at 18:30

Return: Charing Cross – mainline and tube

This outing is the sequential section of the walk from last Thursday. We will be picking up where we left off at Paddington Station and will hopefully manage to make it to Charing Cross. The route passes through the Royal Parks and Belgravia.

Outdoor pubs will now be open – so perhaps we will find a watering hole near the end. If that fails, there is always the old standby of procuring provisions from a local shop for post walk refreshies….

    Eight (many the same from last week's part 1 of this walk) surfaced in Paddington for the second stage of this walk through London visiting its terminus train stations in rather brisk but clear conditions . The route took us through Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park which were teaming with signs of spring -- swans sitting on immaculate nests (definitely serious engineers) and three broods of adorable Egyptian Geese. We also passed by Buckingham Palace and through St. James Park before arriving at our destination of Charing Cross. We picked up one more just outside Paddington and met one other who had unfortunately missed us at Paddington towards the end of the walk, making for 10. Finding the local outside hostelries a bit crowded, some of us enjoyed post walk bevies at a very comfortable and sheltered sitting area near the exit of Charing Cross.

SWC 374: London train terminus stations – Part I (Kings Cross to Victoria)

Distance: Approximately 5.5 miles or 9 km for those more metrically minded

Difficulty: 1 out of 10

Meet: In the plaza in front of King’s Cross Station at 18:30

Return: Victoria (mainline/tube)

This route is a segment of a new walk visiting each of the 13 London train terminus stations. With the walks recommencing, thought it would be interesting to see from where they will start…We will hopefully manage the first segment to Paddington plus part of the second segment to Victoria. A subsequent evening walk will cover the second half of the walk from Victoria to Liverpool Street.

Unsure about refreshments on route….though, I would guess we could pick up some supplies and enjoy an al fresco drink, somewhere in Hyde Park….towards the end of the walk…

    Let us all give thanks:the SWC is back. Thank you to the walk setters for this explosion of activity!

    Seven assembled at the appointed place and set off in smaller groups within sight to explore Kings Cross and St P....we were joined by another along the route which passed through and by familiar sights in central London, including Regent's Park....Having spent some time at St. Ps and getting distracted buying some Indian street food on Drummond St....we decided to end the walk about 8pm at some picnic tables near Paddington basin to enjoy some refreshments (and the tasty Indian snacks). I learned later that one other late arrival did the walk as far as Baker Street....So, 9 in chilly breezy conditions .

    On Thursday, we will pick up the walk at Paddington....
