Hi @andrew

There was a closure notice attached to the railing on the path, I usually take a photo of these closure notices but didn't think to do so for this one. To be honest, I wasn't feeling great on this walk and just wanted to get to the end.

I've found the original closure notice https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/media/17730/230_21d_exp31082022.pdf

This is what it says on the West Sussex council site under temporary closures, but I can't find the updated notice about the longer closure.

    Bosham

Affected route: Public Footpath No. 230 - Closed from its junction with Main Road (SU804052) heading south to its junction with Public Footpath No. 2824 (SU803045) for a distance of approximately 845 metres.

Duration: Closed for 21 days from 10 August until 30 August 2022 and will be followed by a longer closure.

Reason: To protect public safety due to the unsafe condition of the footpath surface.

    @Leanne Thanks - directions updated.

Can't tell how long it will last, or if its passable at (not high tide). Nothing about it on the Chichester Harbour Conservancy footpath news page.

It'll be part of the England Coast Path, so will get fixed.

As of 30 August 2022, the path detailed in point 34 is closed for 6 months.

The alternative route is to continue along Main Road (turning left at the stone steps), until you reach Delling Lane. Turn right here and continue along this road until you reach the end, Turn right at The Berkley Arms into Bosham Lane, continue along here to rejoin the route at point 38. The bonus of this diversion is you pass a Coop along Delling Road, should you want to buy lunch or snacks for the rest of your walk.

Alternatively, if you want to skip the recommended pub stop and the Bosham Quay, you can cross the road at the end of Delling Lane and take the path immediately opposite Berkley Arms. This path will take you through Holy Trinity cemetery, until you eventually come out on The Drive. Walk along The Drive until you reach the Public Footpath sign mention in point 41, rejoining the route here. Though, I wouldn't recommend skipping Bosham Quay. It's so beautiful.

I loved this walk. It was easy going with beautiful views of Chichester Harbour.

Well I made the earlier suggested train as it was 3 mins late at CJ. Only 4 others 1 who had paid an additional £10 fare as she was unable to use her Network Card. This was her first walk with the group as she normally organises her own walks using our book. Welcome and hope to see you again. Another used the ticket office at Victoria and was charged £22 instead of £12 with an over 60s travel pass and Senior railcard. En route we met a Clog member from Haywards heath who had caught a later train and finally all made the recommended pub in Bosham at 2.20pm. Two had a very nice lunch but we noted that the Book 1 route was recorded at 9.5 miles and we were using walk notes 2 miles longer hence the late lunch arrival. Luckily the pub is very popular with local tourists and the kitchen stays open until 2.30pm. In the afternoon we met a walker who had missed the later train departing CJ and had travelled to Bosham station to find us.

One left for Chichester without stopping as she wanted to see the Cathedral. Three left at Fishbourne to catch a bus to Chichester hoping to catch earlier trains but only managed a late arriving bus to catch the 5.39 for Victoria after a very tiring humid day.

Did anyone catch the later train? We saw no one else all day from that train.

It is simply not possible to achieve this extended route for a comfortable lunch stop in Bosham but The Old house at home would have been perfect timing especially with the Chidham churchyard for picnics. We did not walk slowly indeed one was reported to be a member of the long distance walkers

Point 3 - the stile mentioned has gone.

6-9 didn't notice all of the barriers mentioned but you really just need to keep going until you see the Chichester harbour information board.

21 - The directions at the car park are a little confusing. I think the correct route is to go up the steps at the end of the car park, then turn left and keep the hedge on your right. There was no sign (at either end) to say this was a permissive path, although I didn't have a problem using it.

Step 34 - I saw the (very faded) sign mentioned but somehow missed the boat yard, as I followed a couple ahead around the harbour edge. Not sure if there are changes here or if I just missed the path.

Step 49 - The path here is already very wet and muddy (in fact the worst I came across on the walk), as it has been churned up by cattle in the field.

I was not especially looking forward to the walk from the A27 into Chichester but a good route has been chosen here, especially through the Bishops Palace gardens. The directions didn't seem quite right here but really just keep to the main path through it and you should find the gate mentioned. It is nice to see Chichester Cathedral is free to visit too and I would recommened a visit if you have time. As someone else has mentioned, there is a cafe at the cathedral, in the cloiseters which the walk passes.

I did this walk last weekend and thought it was really lovely - especially Bosham.

The paths along the edge of the fields at points 11, 14 and 21 were quite overgrown (basically ploughed over at point 14) so wear trousers!

At point 30, the path cutting along the edge of the field has disappeared completely. I slipped and fell on the bank up to the road.

The food at the Anchor Bleu has improved now - there more tempting options available now for lunch including locally caught fish dishes.

Also, a new cafe has opened at Chichester Cathedral, which I would recommend as a tea stop. It has a lovely garden. I'm not sure what the opening times are. You have to go around the back of the cathedral to get to it.

It takes about 2.5 hours to reach Bosham, and after a long train journey that means a very late lunch. It's not mentioned in the book, but there's a very nice pub - rather upmarket - much earlier in the walk, in the village of Chidham: The Old House At Home, in Cot Lane (01243 572477). To find the pub, either carry on past the church, following the road round to the right, or (more simply) stay on Cot Lane as you approach the village to reach it from the opposite direction. You could have an early lunch here and then stop for tea in one of the cafés in Bosham.
