Balcombe Circular via Ardingly Reservoir: Scenic Walks in the English Countryside | UK Walking 🇬🇧Hiking In London, Nov-16
The Balcombe Circular via Ardingly Reservoir is a beautiful walking route in the South East of England, situated in West Sussex. It provides a great day out for hikers, nature lovers, and birdwatchers alike. Please note that the information below is based on data available up until September 2021, and you should verify the latest conditions and paths before embarking on your journey.
Starting Point: Balcombe Train Station, West Sussex
From Balcombe Train Station, head towards the village of Balcombe.
Keep walking until you reach the village pub, The Half Moon Inn. A great spot for a drink or a bite to eat either before or after your walk.
From there, walk down Stockcroft Road, then take a left onto Haywards Heath Road.
After a short distance, you will reach a footpath on your right. This path will lead you towards Ardingly Reservoir.
You will be walking through woods and fields before you reach the reservoir. The path around Ardingly Reservoir offers great views and is a good place to see wildlife, particularly birds.
Once you have circumnavigated the reservoir, you can return to Balcombe the same way you came, or for a change of scenery, you can choose a different path back. There are numerous footpaths and bridleways crisscrossing the area, so there are plenty of options.
If you choose to return via a different route, you might pass through the village of Ardingly itself. If so, you can take the opportunity to visit the Ardingly College, Wakehurst Place (the country estate of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), or the South of England Showground.
Please remember to respect the countryside code: keep dogs on leads near livestock, don't leave any litter, and stick to the footpaths. The walk is relatively easy, but there are some gentle inclines and it can be muddy in places, especially after rain, so wear appropriate footwear.
In terms of transport, Balcombe is on the main train line from London to Brighton, making it easily accessible. If you're driving, there's a car park at Balcombe Station.
It's always wise to check a map or use a GPS device for navigation when you're walking in the countryside. This is a rough guide and the actual path might change due to environmental factors or path diversions.
