Seeking a bit of respite from walking in the mid-day sun, this relatively tree-clad 11 mile walk proved effective.
Setting out from the West station, the walker is soon into the National Trust's 'Denbies Hillside' and, soon after, their 'White Down Lease', where the walker leaves the 'Walk-the-Chalk' path (Dorking to Gomshall) to head South.
Lunch is had at the wonderful St John the Evangelist church on the other side of the valley. This affords fine views of the Downs beyond.
Soon, the walking is through the wooded Wotton Estate on the Greensand Hills, leading into the attractive hamlet of Friday Street, with its 'hammer pond'. More respite in the woods before a final section crossing land managed by Surrey Wildlife Trust and The Forestry Commission leads up to the 'Nower', affording great views over Dorking and the surrounding countryside.
An excellent walk that was perfect for this walkers goals today. It could be slippery and muddy during the winter months, which the shorter distance attracts it to, but just avoid going after rain.
